for the rise in crime during the last 50 years. Routine
activity has changed to make crime more likely.
Homes left vacant during the day or during long vacations
are more accessible as targets of crime. The greater
presence of consumer goods that are highly portable,
such as video equipment and computers, also makes
crime more likely (Cohen and Felson 1979; Felson 1998).
