The Caribbean island of Martinique is part of the French overseas departments in the Lesser Antilles and popular among French tourists. Since the emergence of leisure tourism in the 1950s, the island has predominantly lived from its image as a tropical seaside holiday destination (Logossah and Célimème, 2007 and CMT, 2010). The climate of Martinique is characterized by two seasons: a dry season, “Le Carême”, lasting from around December/January until May/June, and an intermediate wet season, “L′Hivernage”. Northeastern trade winds and daytime maximum temperatures of 28–30 °C characterize the dry period which is the touristic high season. The wet season is characterized by more humid weather, more frequent rains and higher maximum temperatures of around 31–32 °C (Météo France Antilles-Guyane, 2011a, Météo France Antilles-Guyane, 2011b and Météo France Antilles-Guyane, 2011c).
