Citalopram (1-[3-(dimethylamino) propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-carbonitrile) is a bicyclic phthalate
compound approved in 1998 by the US Food and Drug
Administration for the treatment of depression [1]. Fluoxetine, (N-Methyl-3-(p-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-3-phenylpropylamine) is a
very effective selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) [2],
because it also has high affinity for another receptor (5-HT2C) impli-cated in antidepressant pharmacology.
