This is a book to treasure for its rarity value. Although the subject is ethology, the writing is much better than that in most books on this subject and jargon is almost absent. It begins with a charming dedication based on an Angolan folk song. The book is based on two years' work on two downland beef suckler herds in England. The usual format has been employed and no great discoveries are reported, but the flights of fancy so often found in ethological publications are absent. This is particularly evident in the final section on socio-biology [why not "social behaviour?], where the possible causes of various types of behaviour are discussed.
