He was an enlightened ruler, who expanded educational institutions and built railways and hospitals. His efforts at fostering communal harmony, virtually extinguished the historic animosities between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the state. He was given the G.C.S.I.
His son Muhammad Mahabat Khanji's love for dogs was legendary. This love also extended to the regional wildlife, particularly the Asiatic lion, which at the time was on the verge of extinction. The Nawab pioneered conservation efforts by preserving vast tracts of the Gir forest in order to provide the lions with a stable habitat. This would later be known as the world famous Gir Sanctuary.
His decision to accede his relatively small princely state of Junagadh which was landlocked within India with the Dominion of Pakistan during the Partition of India, during Independence, led to the Indian army taking military action against Junagadh.
