The student can interact with the computer in three
separate ways. The computer can be used for drill and
practice sessions which would supplement the regular
teaching process. This work is particularly suitable for
the skill subjects.
A second application for the student
is the tutorial system.
Here the system has the main
responsibility for helping the student understand a
concept and develop skill in using it.
The aim is to
approximate the interaction a patient tutor would have
with an individual student.
The final computer-student
system is the dialog system. In these systems, the
student can conduct a genuine dialog with the com-puter. Although drill-and-practice and tutorial systems
are already in operation on an experimental basis, the
dialog system may be some years away because of
several technical problems.
