Internationally, countries like the U.S, India are into large
scale processing of fruits into various forms. Altman and Eiteman
(2009) stated that about 1.8 million tonnes of watermelon
were produced in the U.S. in 2007 and 362,874 tonneswere
abandoned as culled crop which represent about 20% of production.
In recent studies in the U.S, it was revealed that the
culled watermelon has significant potential for use as a sugar
source to produce ethanol.
