Publishing & Bookshops
Dublin has nearly 50 publishing houses covering the entire publishing spectrum from books to literary periodicals. The annual Dublin Book Festival is a showcase for Irish published books. There are bookshops large and small on most city centre streets.
We asked them for a wee bit of information, but you know the Irish. Once they get going…
•Books were chained to the shelves of Marsh’s Library, Ireland’s first public library, built in Dublin in 1701 – and still open
•The James Joyce Museum is in a Martello tower built to withstand invasion by Napoleonic troops. Joyce set the opening chapter of Ulysses there
•Jonathan Swift, the author of Gulliver’s Travels, was the dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. He left money to open a hospital for imbeciles
•Orson Welles and James Mason began their careers in the Gate Theatre
•Oscar Wilde’s father was eye surgeon to Queen Victoria
•Brendan Behan drank in the Brazen Head, the oldest pub in the country built in 1613
•Irish Ferries called all their ships after Dublin writers, Dublin Airport has huge glass murals of writers and three of Dublin’s newest bridges are called after Dublin writers.
•The Abbey, the national theatre, was founded in 1901 by Nobel Laureate W.B. Yeats among others.
•The audience rioted when J.M. Synge’s play The Playboy of the Western World was premiered in 1907.
•The house where Oscar Wilde was born is now the Oscar Wilde School of Creative Writing attached to Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest university founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592.
