Hoffman argues that there are three critical ways in which organizational democracy is enhanced. The first of these is through shared values. Of course, because Benedictine nuns take vows, these shared values could, perhaps, be assumed. However, what’s interesting is the way in which these religious values are relevant to organizational democracy. For example, ‘’the vow of obedience, seemingly out-of-place in a democratic organization, is interpreted to mean a commitment to attentive listening and mutual responsibility’’ (Hoffman, 2002, p. 209). Thus, it is critical that organizational members share fundamental values such as equality, participation, support, and the dignity of all contributions.
