NPs must understand how policy interacts with and influences
the nursing profession (Fyffe, 2009). This understanding
is critical if we are to have policies that
reflect the values of NPs. Unless professional NP
organizations develop ways of achieving coherence
and sharing knowledge, NPs may be unable to realize
any type of influence over policy development (Fyffe,
2009). Creating opportunities for NPs to become
familiar with advocacy and the political process in
the safe environment of the professional nursing
organizations will engage more NPs on a personal level.
Increasing the capacity for advocacy lies in creating opportunities
for NPs to learn about the health policy/advocacy
process, engage and interact in the process, and
mentor other NPs in the process (Fyffe, 2009). Once
nurses are engaged in the world of health policy, few,
if any, will turn their backs on it (Fyffe, 2009; Leavitt,
2009). Only with broader representation and personal
commitment from the NP community can NPs truly
have an impact on shaping health care legislation.
