Wat Phra Singh was built about 1385 under the direction of Phra Chao Maha Proma [ 1345 to 1400 ]. Apart from its historical significance it has important Buddhist artifacts and significant architecture. The Viharn, which has been restored, is famous for its art, most importantly the carved wooden doors and the replicas of the Phra Singh
The Phra Sihing Buddha image is believed to have come from Sri Lanka. According to Chiang Mai Chronicles Phra Chao Maha Proma attempted to usurp the Chiang Mai throne upon the death of his brother Phra Nue Na but failed and withdrew to the protection of the king of Ayutthaya. He later returned to Chiang Rai and brought the Phra Sihing Buddha image with him from Ayutthaya.
The Phra Sihing Buddha image is in bronze and gold plated. It is in the bhumisparsa pose and is in the Sinhalese style from Sri Lanka.
In the front of the Viharn next to the Bohdi tree from Indis is a small Chapel for the foot print of the Buddha Behind the Viharn is a Chedi with a square base and a white washed seven tiered on the top.
