Even though various economic schemes much as AFTA,AFAS and AIA have been implemented to move forward deeper economic integration, ASEAN seems less integrated as an economic bloc. It is widely accepted that loose economic cooperation in ASEAN is a result of the ASEAN Way. The norm prevents member stat from pooling their sovereignty. Instead , it upholds and preserves the national interests of the individual state. More importantly, politics and national interests still play a significant role in driving regional economic integration at the expense of economic forces.
Recently, the biggest challenge of the AEC has been the constant demand for the protection of domestic industries and support national objectives and aspirations through the NTBs as evident in Malaysia , Indonesia and the Philippines. This is because individual states have attempted to protect domestic producers and strategic sectors from neighboring competitors. This underscores the assertion that domestic interests are still prioritized over regional interests. Consequently , the NTBs illuminate some of the obstacles ahead of the AEC.
