In terms of value, the expansion of exports has been driven by the manufacturing sector. However, the rapid change in the composition of exports has to be set against the dramatic decline in the relative level of primary export prices since the early 1980s. This tends to obscure the very substantial increases in the volume and variety of primary exports, which between 1986 and 1994 more than doubled their value.
