8. Weigh at least 25 g of a dry unknown metal and place it in a test tube and label it.
Repeat that for a second and third metal sample.
9. Loosely stopper the test tubes to prevent condensation inside the tube and place them in the recirculating water bath. Each test tube must be immersed in hot water at least 15 minutes before the metal is transferred to the calorimeter
10. Add approximately 70 mL of cool water (by mass) to the inner cup and weigh the whole apparatus. Stir the water gently until a constant temperature is reached. Leave the thermometer in the cup suspended without touching the sides or the bottom of the cups. Record the temperature.
11. Record the temperature of the hot water bath immediately before mixing.
12. Using beaker holders or tongs and heat-resistant gloves, grasp the test tube containing the heated metal, remove the cork and quickly (but carefully) pour the hot metal into Styrofoam cups. Be careful that no hot water on the outside of the test tube gets in the cups. Record the appropriate temperature as in Step 5.
13. Pour out the water saving the metal to dry and be reused in future labs. Dry the inside of the cups and repeat the procedure for second and third metals.
