The News Feed is where Facebook users spend most of their time because
that is where posts about their friends appear. The News Feed is the center of the
action for Facebook users. Industry analysts believe that Facebook users spend 27%
of their time on the Home/News Feed section, followed by their Profiles (21%) and
Photos (17%). There are several ways for a firm to appear in users’ News Feeds. Unpaid
“stories about friends” describe how a friend has actively engaged with a brand, for
instance, “Sara Likes Southwest Airlines,” followed by a story from Sara describing
why she likes Southwest. However, paid brand messages can also be inserted into the
News Feed or just to the right of the News Feed (these are also called “Premium Ads”),
where they may receive more attention than Marketplace Ads.
