Lesson VOC 60
Task: Cook: boil items.
Prerequisites: ADT 17, ADT 100 (or 101), SEN 12, SEN 34, VOC 5, VOC
Concept: Because them are safety concerns with this lesson, the student must be skilled at following a supervisor's instructions (see prerequisite VOC 5). In this particular lesson, the student is asked to boil a vegetable such as corn that has been frozen in a bag designed for boiling. Although this is one of the more simple acts of boiling food, it can later be expanded to involve activities such as making pasta or rice. The student will also need to use scissors (see prerequisite SEN 34) and tongs.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to boil a frozen bag of vegetables, the student will prepare the water, bring it to a boil on a stove, boil the item for a specific time, use tongs to remove the item, and (after it has cooled) use scissors to open the bag to 9091, accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A pan, water, tongs, scissors, empty plastic bags, a bowl, a stove, and a frozen product designed for boiling.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student the ability to turn on a stove burner and set it to "high." Upon success, immediately turn the stove burner off.
2. Using the student's abilities with a faucet, verbally guide the student to fill the pan with water about halfway and place it on the stove burner.
3. Guide the student to the location where the selected frozen product is stored. Assist the student in opening the package to obtain the bagged frozen product.
4. Guide the student in the use of tongs and practice holding the bag with the tongs and placing the hag into the pan.
5. Combine the concepts of Steps 1 through 4 to perform the whole process. In some cases, the instructions will state to not place the bag in the water until boiling; otherwise, place it in the water as the stove is started.
6. Guide the student to keep the product in the water for a specific period of time (see prerequisite ADT 100 or ADT 101). Prompt the student to "tell the supervisor" when the time period has elapsed.
7. Upon completion of Step 6, guide the student in removing the bag by using the tongs and placing the bag in the bowl.
