Winterbourne had to do what Mrs Walker asked. He knew this . He walked quickly to Daisy and Giovanelli.
Miss Miller, Mrs Walker is asking me to go with her," he said "I'm afraid that I must go."
Winterbourne thought Daisy was going to say something rude or unkind. But she just shook his hand. Giovanelli took off his hat slowly and bowed.
Winterbourne walked back to Mrs Walker's carriage and sat down inside it. He was not pleased.
"That was not a clever thing to do," Winterbourne said, as the carriage moved along the road.
"I didn't want to be clever," answered Mrs Walker. "miss Miller had to know the truth about what she was doing. I had to tell her."
"Well, now you have offended her," said Winterbourne.
