GOVERNMENT CONTROLS ON THE USE AND DISTRIBUTION OF DRUGS
Legislation Thailand has for many years been aware of the social, physical and
economic problems caused by the use of illicit drugs. Historically, the use of opium has been
both legal and illegal, showing the changing views of Thailand and world opinion
on its harmfulness. In 1976 the Government classed drug dependence as a national priority
priority problem and it has remained high on the political agenda ever since (Poshyachinda
