Switching to a cleaner fuel can result in huge reductions in greenhouse gases and toxic air emissions. For example, switching from electricity to natural gas heating can reduce heating costs by as much as 75 percent.39 Some companies can use waste products from their own manufacturing processes to produce energy. Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas, anticipates reducing the facility's carbon emissions by more than 500 metric tons by installing a biogas generation and wastewater treatment facility. The new facility will convert Spoetzl's waste products from its brewing processes into methane gas, which it will use to fuel the boilers for beer production. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the facility will reduce Spoetzl's natural gas consumption by more than 95,000 therms per year.40 Companies that use their own waste products for fuel won't need to purchase as much fuel, which also cuts down on their disposal costs.
