Heterotrophic bacteria counts ranged between 7.75 x 103 and
4.56 x 104 cfu/ml for Tshwane River water, between 2.91 x 103
and 5.08 x 104 cfu/ml for Lefatlhleng Well, between 7.0 x 102 and
1.08 x 106 cfu/ml for Matlaisane groundwater, between 1.0 x 101
and 1.63 x 104 cfu/ml for Tlhaloganyo rain water (with an avarage
count of 3.27 x 103 cfu/ml) and counts for Tlhaloganyo groundwater
were between 0 and 1.15 x 104 cfu/ml, with an avarage count of
4.69 x 103 (Table 2). Heterotrophic bacteria counts for all five
water sources were generally above 1.0 x 102 cfu/ml, which is the
maximum recommended limit for no risk (DWAF, 1996). The
general microbiological quality of the water sources was therefore
above the allowed limit.
