Problem-solving therapies focus on facilitation of social competence through training in systematic problem solving; it attempts to provide a structure for working on problems that resist ready solutions. Many of the steps identified in problem-solving therapies, particularly problem identification, goal formation, and the generation of alternative actions and evaluation of these alternatives, are fostered by group interaction.
