Censorship at New England University
Dean Jenkins glanced out his second story window at the antique clock on the tower building across the
quad. It was already 6:00 PM. It had been another long day for the Dean of Administration. Several
student and faculty groups had visited his office to protest the decision to censor some of the newsgroups
received over the Internet at the University. On this day he had also received a long protest letter from the
local chapter of the ACLU, and was pilloried in an editorial of the school newspaper for “selling out” on
the First Amendment. His mind was sluggish but he decided to stay in the office a bit longer and catch up
on some paperwork. Tomorrow he would be visiting the President’s office to discuss the situation and
determine a future course of action.
