Høyer (2000) emphasizes that sustainable tourism should be
linked to the concept of sustainable mobility. He concludes that this
kind of mobility would imply not only a change to cleaner modes of
transport, but also reductions in the levels of mobility in the richest
parts of the world. However, this goal is not easily feasible, because
current lifestyles are often based on car dependence. This is an
inertia system and is promoted by powerful interest groups, such as
the car lobbies. To change this behaviour there is need for forces to
oppose this inertia; for example, more mobility education at
a school level, efficient information about alternatives, and the
application of restrictive and incentive/disincentive transport
policies.
