Dr. Jiko Luveni was a Dentist by profession and practiced as a clinician and public health dentistry for twenty years in the Ministry of Health. She has undertaken Advisory Assignments for WHO during her term in the Primary and Preventive Health Services of the Ministry. She joined UNFPA to serve the Pacific Region for 15 years before setting up the NGO ‘Fiji Network for People Living with HIV & AIDS’ as its Executive Director.
In 2008, Dr. Jiko Luveni was invited to serve in Government as Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation. During her term, the Ministry for Women has provided assistance to more than 1,300 women’s groups throughout Fiji. The Reforms within the Social Welfare program has seen an increase in beneficiaries from 21,000 to more than 60,000 and persons who are 70 years and over are enjoying assistance offered to them.
On 6th October, 2014, Dr. Jiko Luveni was elected as the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji. This appointment marks an important event, being the first female Speaker in the history of Fiji.
