minor retentions.
Delta-pro is the key technology that differentiates EVault to many of our competitors.
Key take-away:
All backup have to start with a full backup, this provide the base or seed copy.
Most backup, in the attempt to reduce backup time and effort, introduces incremental backup for the minor retentions. Incremental backup traditionally works at the file level, using the operating system to provide indication that a file has been modified. The modified files are then collected and backed up by the backup application. This is the only way for tape backup as tape device is linear and have to handle contiguous and recognizable files. Even when moved to disk backup, many solutions retained this approach in order to have compatibility with traditional tape operations. The issue with this approach is that in today’s environment, a single file can be very large. Powerpoint presentation for example are easily in the MB today. Database files can be GB in size. Moving modified files in incremental backup still mean moving a lot of data. Typically for these backup solutions, incremental backup still requires moving 10-20% of the original dataset.
With EVault Delta-pro, we move on level lower to inspect the blocks that constitutes the files. While a file can be MB or even GB in size, for us, each block is just 32K. Delta-pro drastically reduces the amount of data that have to be moved to the backup storage making very efficient use of the network and the storage. Using Delta-Pro, the incremental backup size are frequently only 1-1.5% of the original dataset, making EVault backup solution an order of magnitude in performance compared to other solutions.
