This study confirms that the consumption of non pasture species such as trees and shrub foliage (e.g., leaves and twigs) and bark chewing are frequently observed in pastured domestic horses in Australia. Although horse owners experience pasture or land problems such as overgrazing, weeds, and erosion and need to provide supplementary feeding, it remains to be elucidated if browse selection by pastured horses is an expression of reduced food availability or is associated with a need for variety and satiety for particular nutrients.
