The growth performance data presented in
Tables 2 and 4 show that growth of T. pectoralis in
rice fields is difficult. The SGR of B. gonionotus, O.
niloticus and C. carpio was many times higher
(Table 3), indicating that these fish are better
adapted to the environmental conditions of intensively
cultivated rice fields. The low SGR in
combination with an average survival rate of 66%
resulted in negative net productions, leaving
T. pectoralis unfit for fish culture in intensively
cultivated rice fields. This corresponds with findings
of Ardiwinata (1957) who stated that T. pectoralis
has a disappointing growth rate compared with
other fish cultivated in rice fields
