Pomegranate and its constituents have safely
been consumed for centuries without adverse effects.
Studies of pomegranate constituents in animals at concentrations
and levels commonly used in folk and traditional
medicine note no toxic effects.91 Toxicity of the
polyphenol antioxidant punicalagin, abundant in pomegranate
juice, was evaluated in rats. No toxic effects or
significant differences were observed in the treatment
group compared to controls, which was confirmed via
histopathological analysis of rat organs.92
