Sexual abuse
Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child or young
person to take part in sexual activity. It is often associated with
other types of abuse. Potential signs of sexual abuse include:
■■Pain, bruises or itching in the genitals; skin manifestations
including lichen sclerosus
■■Rectal or vaginal bleeding; infection in or around the
vulva; anogenital warts; and anal fissures (fissures can also
be caused by constipation or inflammatory bowel disease)
■■ Sexually transmitted disease
■■Behavioural problems presenting in various ways, including
self-harm, mutilation, aggression, night terror, or poor
school performance.
