Data from the spiritual well-being scale was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics of ranges and means were calculated both for
overall spiritual well-being and for the sub-scales of religious and existential well-being. Content analysis was performed of the open-ended questions using the method proposed by Patton (1987). Themes were generated by one faculty member and then reviewed by a second faculty member. We were aware of the potential for bias given our own investment in the curriculum, and so employed some of the techniques for enhancing theoretical sensitivity suggested by
Strauss and Corbin (1990).
