Foam separation
Foam separation controls accumulation of dis- solved organic wastes. It is accomplished here by passing finely divided air bubbles through a column o culture medium. Surface-active compounds are con centrated on large amounts of gas-liquid interfaces. They are removed at the top in solute-enriched foam, or are filtered from the column effluent as formed particles. Removal of complex organic molecules from seawater by foaming has been well documented (BAYLOR and SUTCLIFFE, 1963; BAYLOR et al., 1962 BRUNNER and STEPHAN, 1965; RILEy et al., 1964), although qualitative investigation of foam products has only recently been attempted.
