The improvement in transportation service with a
corresponding reduction in transportation costs has mainly
been attributed to the deregulation of the transportation
industry in 1980. However, several other trends were also
affecting logistics during this time span and continue to do
so at present. Deregulation of the transportation industry
along with available new technologies, global supply chains,
and a corporate drive for asset productivity have all
converged to shape a new logistics environment[3].
