Another key change which you may need to make concerns how you see yourself and your work at the moment. As an experienced and successful teacher you may well be operating at a level of skilled pragmatism. You may have disconnected from aspects of your job which you associate with earlier experiences – with being new, even with being a trainee. These include addressing your practice explicitly, as we have said. You may need to stand back from the work and look at it through a new lens, because skilled pragmatism can deliver considerable success and is no small achievement; but at some point its usefulness expires. It will carry you so far at a given career stage and then you will need something else. This can sometimes, briefly, feel like stepping backwards.
