The secondary sources I used were the readings from the class. I predominantly drew upon Bawarshi and Reiff’s “Genre: An Introduction to History, Theory, Research, and Pedagogy”, Sheran Marriam’s “How to Analyze Qualitative Data” and Anne Beaufort’s “College Writing and Beyond”. I use “Genre: An Introduction to History, Theory, Research, and Pedagogy” to define genre, specifically stating “Bawarshi and Reiff define genre as “a relatively stable class of linguistic and rhetorical “events” which members of a discourse community have typified in order to respond to and achieve shared communicative goals” (19). My study is entirely focused on genres used by physicians, so by giving a definition of this term, I eliminate any confusion that may occur in my audience when comprehending this word.
