Waste diversion from landfill has been widely accepted by the
governments, waste authorities and city corporations. The diversion
rate can be defined as the percentage of total waste that is
diverted from disposal at permitted landfills and transformation
facilities such as incineration, and instead is directed to reduction,
reuse, recycling and composting programs (CalRecycle, 2012). The
waste diversion rate can be formulated as in Equation (1).
