In contrast to the irridex model, Butler’s model focused on the complexity of the
interactional process. Butler pointed out the complexity dependent on two determinant
factors: social attributes of visitors (the length of stay; their racial and economical
backgrounds) and the carrying capacity of the local community (the level of economic
development; the spatial distributions of economic and other activities). These factors
might give rise to a variety of attitudinal and behavioral responses in the population of
destination areas.
