The presented study aimed at developing a simple and reliable
method for an accurate determination of total iodine contents in
macroalgae and seaweed-derived food products. Potential impacts
of interfering constituents during the analytical process were
prevented by removing organic (via incineration) and inorganic
compounds (via chromatographic separation). Cost-effectiveness
was maintained by using a standard high performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC) system equipped with a diode array detector
(DAD), allowing the specific detection of iodine in less than
20 min. Additionally iodine levels in edible Irish macroalgae and
some commercial seaweed food products were compared to estimate
potential iodine intake via seaweed/product consumption
