Technology addiction has been recognized since the mid-1990s as a new kind of social problems
that similar to other traditional addictions [1]. Among many technology related addictions, mobile
smartphone addiction is newer and more serious today. As we understand, smartphone and mobile
service have changed the way we live a lot. Smartphone use in Korea has increased dramatically and
has become a major part of daily life. Smartphone service subscribers in Korea are estimated to be
more than 30 million as of December 2012(Korea Herald, 2012.12.1), which is near to 70% market
penetration rate.
While many have focused on the benefits that result from mobile service, there are also some
disadvantages [2]. A recent study shows that most mobile phone users suffer from a severe anxiety and
panic attack when they are away from their phones [3].
However, there is little empirical research exploring the addictive behavior and other related issues
[4]. The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept of smartphone addiction, and a model that can be
used to understand problematic smartphone use will be analyzed.
