For the purpose of this study, I employed a method of qualitative description to explore the factors gay API men deemed important in predicting unsafe sexual practices. As a research methodology, qualitative description draws from the general tenets of naturalistic inquiry in that, ‘‘there is no preselection of variables to study, no manipulation of variables, and no a priori commitment to any one theoretical view of a target phenomenon’’ (Sandelowski, 2000, p. 337). Rather, the focus is on providing a comprehensive summary of an event or a phenomenon in the ‘‘everyday terms of those events’’ (Sandelowski, 2000).
