MFU Hold a Forum on Trans-boundary Haze Pollution Control
Transboundary haze pollution is an important problem affecting human health, buildings, transportation, travel as well as environmental quality in the five Greater Mekong Sub-region countries: Thailand, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This problem tends to become more pronounced and more severe during the period of late winter (December) to summer (April), especially in the year with drought conditions. This period has been recognized as the peak period because of forest fires and open burning which lead to dense accumulation of dust, smoke and other dry particles from combustions and form a thick of haze layer in the atmosphere.
In its green campaign, MFU through the Institute for the Study of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) in partnership with Thailand's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Thai Universities for Healthy Public Policy organized a forum on Collaborative Efforts to Prevent, Control, and Mitigate Transboundary Haze Pollution in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The forum was held on May 30, 2014 at Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand.
The main objectives of the forum were to share information about the situation and the efforts being taken on forest fires and open burning in each of the five Greater Mekong Sub-region countries. Secondly, the forum also focused on the necessary collaborative efforts to prevent, control, and mitigate the transboundary haze pollution in the Sub-region.
The keynote speakers included: Mr. Suvit Kattiyavong (Deputy Director General, Pollution Control Department, Thailand), Dr. Kampanat Deeudomchan (Head of Environment and Disaster Division, Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, Thailand), Mr. Surinh Kousonsavath (Deputy Head of Agro-Meteorological and Climate Division, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Lao PDR), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charlie Navanugraha (Director of Institute for the Study of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand).
The event also helped promoting the collaboration between Thailand and other Greater Mekong Sub-region countries on the issue of transboundary haze pollution and development of a collaborative network for the Mae Fah Luang University’s project on Environmental Disaster Warning Center.
