The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged provincial authorities in the Hong (Red) River Delta to stamp out ragged stunt and yellow black stunt, which hinder rice growth in the region.
Minister Cao Duc Phat has required the Plant Protection Department and local authorities to give farmers effective measures and proper agro-chemicals for disease prevention and fighting this week after checking out hard-hit rice fields in Tien Hai District in Thai Binh Province.
A report from Thai Binh Province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development showed that around 10,000ha of winter-spring crop at seven out of eight districts in the province were infected with the diseases.
Seven communes in Thai Binh City and 18 communes in Thai Thuy District were reported as getting the diseases en mass. Vu Phuc and Dong My communes in Thai Binh City were the worst-hit, with 170ha of affected rice fields.
The agriculture departments in Tien Hai District, where 150ha of rice fields were almost ruined and 300ha infected with the diseases, and Thai Thuy District, where 5,000ha were destroyed, have guided farmers to eliminate infected rice plants, spray fields with agro-chemicals and keep them clean and replace current crops with shorter-term rice crops.
Local authorities also asked farmers to take steps to stamp out brown plant-hoppers, the pests that brought the diseases, with proper spraying. Tien Hai District authorities have spent VND100 million (US$5,300) to purchase and supply chemicals to 14 co-operatives in the district to deal with the diseases.
Nam Dinh Province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that the pest infestation and the resulting rice disease had occurred during the winter-spring rice crop in nine communes of Giao Thuy, Nghia Hung and Hai Hau districts.
The provincial People's Committee chairman Nguyen Hanh Phuc has sent staff to guide farmers on disease fighting and prevention. The committee will support farmers to re-cultivate their crops and spray chemicals to avoid the diseases' recurrence. The ministry has thus far provided 14 tonnes of anti-pest chemicals to local farmers.
The minister asked provincial authorities to completely stamp out the diseases, as they could get complicated and difficult to control if left untreated. - VNS
