additional crop monitoring, record-keeping, and discontinuing
the use of cheaper inputs in favour of more labour-intensive
practices. All of these changes are likely to increase labour
requirements per unit of land (Hobbs, 2003). Therefore,
farmers with larger cultivated areas (not included here due to
being collinear with the variable labha) and/or lower amounts
of labour available per cultivated area (labha) are less likely to
adopt the practices. Other characteristics of the farms are less
influential in the decision to adopt. ‘Renters only’ farmers are
less likely to adopt than are pure land owners (but the relation
is not significant). In the same way, no significant relationship
is found when off-farm activity is present.
