Korean Confucianism
Religion has become secularized in today’s society and its influence weaker; however, it still has a great influence on human society in general. In Korean society, there are many influence from traditional religion with respect to a sense of values and worldview. Confucianism has been the most influential religion among Korean traditional religions; however, today more than 30% of the Korean population Buddhist so we cannot ignore the influence of Buddhism.
In this section we examine Confucianism and Buddhism, the two most influential religions in Korea, both of which are based on authoritarianism which puts importance on the patriarchal group order. Although Confucianism was originally the base of Korean secularized culture, after the period of Japanese colonization ended and after American culture was introduced to Korea, the Confucian influence became much weaker.
