Figure 4 relates the mean number of tasks per topic to
the complexity index, the percentage of all tasks in the
complex procedural, conceptual, and authentic problem
categories. At one extreme is the OSU course that offers
fairly simple tasks. At the other extreme is OLI that offers a
preponderance of complex tasks. The remaining three
courses are clustered around the 50% level of cognitive
complexity but with NORTON having nearly 50% more
practice opportunities than the other courses. However,
NORTON does not provide any authentic practice so that
students can experience knowledge in use.
