Permissive parents are high in acceptance/responsiveness but low on the demanding/control dimension. Essentially they warm and accepting of their children but make little effort to control or regulate their children’s behavior. They will grant autonomy and responsibility for making decisions to their children in areas such as daily routines (mealtimes, bedtimes, television watching), often before they are developmentally ready. Baumrind (1967) note that some parents tended to adopt this style due to a lack of confidence in their ability to influence their children. Similarly, Oyster man et al. (2005) found an association between a lack of parenting confidence and permissive parenting in mothers with mental health problems.
