Individual interviews were conducted
with all seven teachers and extended interviews with the three teachers observed to gather in-depth information about teachers' knowledge and beliefs on questioning. The extended
interviews were used to seek clarification for teachers' techniques of
questioning, i.e., for teachers to rationalize why they do things the way they do .
Ten semi-structured interview items were posed in the individual interviews. The interview
items used in the extended interviews were developed based on the classroom observation of the
three teachers. Questions posed in each extended interview were based on what was observed in
that particular participant's lessons but still within the parameters of the research questions for
the individual interviews.
