Wheat prices climbed, shrugging off the rising U.S. dollar on short covering by investors. Prices for the grain caught a bid from government data released Monday showing smaller-than-expected domestic and global wheat stockpiles, which prompted investors to buy those position and lifted the market. Although USDA lowered its estimates for wheat inventories only slightly, the fresh buying also comes at a time when wheat prices typically move higher given their vulnerability in spring to threats from drought, a freeze or insects. "We got a short-covering bounce today" the rising wheat prices led the corn market higher, which in turn "helped drag soybeans up." May wheat rose 5 3/4 cents, or 1.2%, to $4.99 a bushel.
