On the basis of its epistemology and values, the public educator ideology incorporates
an awareness of the problem of black students in education as described at the
beginning of this section. It acknowledges that overt and institutional racism arc the
causes of some black student' underparticipation and underachievement in mathematics, and their consequent alienation from school and society In particular, it is
recognized that absolutist views of mathematics provide the epistemological foundations
of institutional racism.
