Windows Server 2012 Windows Deployment Services (WDS) supports deployment of Windows 8 over IPv6 or IPv4 PXE to UEFI capable systems. However, Windows 7 doesn’t support WDS 2012 deployment over IPv6 PXE. If IPv6 PXE boot is enabled and a Windows 7 installation is selected, a blank screen will appear and Setup will not run.
In order to deploy a Windows 7 from WDS 2012, the machine BIOS/UEFI firmware needs to be configured with the IPv4 PXE network boot option.
Windows Server 2012 WDS can be configured to present the user with a menu of installable Windows images to load when booting from the network, including Windows 7 and Windows 8 images. Windows 8 supports WDS 2012 deployment over IPv6, but Windows 7 does not. If a network trace is captured, the Windows 7 image will be successfully downloaded to the client machine over TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol), but the client will not attempt to issue a DHCPv6 DISCOVER to obtain an IPv6 network address, and the user will observe a blank screen.
