Motivation has been implicated as important to selfmanagement
by many but has received relatively little
research attention. Kyngas and Hentinen (1995), in their
qualitative study of 51 adolescents with diabetes, identi®ed
motivation to take care of themselves as promoting good
compliance with self-care. Subsequently, when a model of
compliance was constructed based on questionnaire data
from 346 subjects, 12±17 years old, these authors (Kyngas
et al. 1996) reiterated that motivation is an `essential aspect'
(p. 1003) of compliance with self-care.
